I love a sunburnt country

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,

Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.

I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,

Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

Dorothea MacKellar, born in 1885, was one of Australia's best loved poets.
She wrote the above poem 'My Country' at the age of 19, while homesick in England.

Happy Australia Day!

  1. Who would've thought a bout of homesickness would inspire a poem that would still be read and loved over a century later.......enjoy the day Trudy....

  7. Happy Australia day to you Trudy. What a great antidote to all the pictures of snow! I haven't been to see your country yet, but I think I would like it. I imagine friendly smiling people with a laid back attitude and lots of sun! Heather x

  11. Beautiful pictures, beautiful poem. I'll think of it while everything is under a white, very wet blanket, the sky grey and the air cold. Regula
